Will he or won't he?
That's the question surrounding longtime Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews these days.
Obviously Toews days with the Blackhawks are over after team publicly stated it would NOT be bringing Toews back this offseason. The 35 year old center is a free agent for the first time in his NHL career but there hasn't exactly been a bidding war for his services and that's because he isn't clear whether or not he'll continue his career. In fact, NHL insider Frank Seravalli is now reporting that he is "hearing rumblings that he could announce his retirement" this summer and it "appears that is the way things are heading."
Given his injury and illness injuries the past couple seasons and given the outstanding career that Toews has put together an no one would blame him if he decided to pack it in this summer. Oh... it doesn't hurt that he has $115 million in the bank thanks in large part to an $84 million deal that he signed back in 2014. Now though, with three Stanley Cup championships, a Conn Smythe Trophy and two Olympic gold medals there's nothing left for Toews to prove in the sport. He's seen as one of the greatest leaders in NHL history and was the backbone of a Blackhawks team that was the closest thing to a dynasty that we've seen in an entire generation.
If this is indeed the end of his career, Toews will finish with 372 goals and 883 points in 1067 career regular season games and a further 45 goals and 119 points in 137 career Stanley Cup Playoff games... all with the Blackhawks.
