The Edmonton Oilers haven't exactly exploded out of the gate this season. Though they currently boast a record above the .500 mark, their 12-10 mark isn't quite up to par with the expectations of a team that advanced to last year's Western Conference Final.
But with one major piece of their lineup out of action for the foreseeable future in the form of Evander Kane, who suffered a horrific cut on his wrist after being accidentally stepped on by the skate of Pat Maroon, they could be looking to make an addition in his absence.
There are a few names listed by Allan Mitchell of The Athletic as potential intriguing options for Oilers general manager Ken Holland to consider. In the first place, two names from the Boston Bruins in Trent Frederic and A.J. Greer:
"The Bruins boast centre Trent Frederic and winger A.J. Greer as legit options. Both qualify as physical five-on-five outscorers, and their cap hits could be added to the Oilers’ roster easily. Both men play under 10 minutes per game at five-on-five, and are not counted on for either special teams work in a meaningful way."
Additionally, the article lists New Jersey Devils right winger Nathan Bastian as a potential.
"Bastian is a strong option who has emerged as a player who can deliver rugged play, score enough to stay in the lineup and help outscore opponents. His expected goals at five-on-five has been on the positive side of the ledger from the start, but this season he has found the range in all areas."
And finally, Mitchell lists Zack MacEwen of the Philadelphia Flyers:
"Oilers fans will be familiar with MacEwen, who played the first three seasons of his NHL career with the Vancouver Canucks. He’s 6-foot-3, 205 pounds and has had real success across the board in the early days of the 2022-23 season with the Philadelphia Flyers. The question the Oilers need to ask is can he sustain these numbers?"
