Report: Draisaitl turned down MASSIVE contract offer

The Edmonton Oilers open training camp in just over five weeks, and star forward Leon Draisaitl still remains unsigned. 

According to one source, Joshua Marshall, Draisaitl reportedly turned down an 8-year, $64 million contract two weeks ago. While there’s no way to validate the report, it’s always interesting to speculate the terms that have been discussed. The Oilers are about $16.8 million under the $75 million NHL salary cap for 2017-18, according to CapFriendly.com.

Draisaitl’s team-leading 16-point performance through Edmonton’s playoff run has him in an optimal position for negotiations. It’s unclear how Connor McDavid's recent extension that carries an annual $12.5 AAV is affecting these negotiations. 

It isn’t uncommon for restricted free agent signings to come down to the wire, as David Pastrnak  of the Boston Bruins still remains unsigned and Johnny Gaudreau and the Calgary Flames didn’t agree on a contract until two days before the 2016-17 season started. 

The 21-year-old German forward is coming off a career-high 29-goal, 77-point season and is expected to be one of the league’s best power forwards for many years. How much do you think Draisaitl is worth?
