Report: David Ayres and his now estranged wife appear to get in ugly spat on social media

This is some seriously dirty laundry aired out for the entire hockey world to see.

It's been awhile since we've heard from everyone's favorite emergency backup goalie David Ayres and, frankly, this isn't the kind of update I was expecting from him.

Ayres, of course, received his 5 minutes of fame back in 2020 when he came in an emergency situation to play for the Carolina Hurricanes and remarkably managed to earn a victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. It should be noted that Ayres was an employee of the Leafs at the time who worked with the players during extra practice sessions and even drove the Zamboni when required. Of course, this led to countless memes mocking the Leafs for losing to their own damn Zamboni driver. It was WILD stuff.

Ayres embraced his 15 minutes of fame and has done some pretty cool things for charity by using his newfound fame and even managed to get himself a coaching job with the PJHL's Port Perry Lumberjacks. But lately, things haven't gone great in Ayres' personal life. His wife Sarah Ayres, who has been by his side since he first came to to prominence, reportedly left him over the offseason after experiencing what she calls "emotional abuse."

Back in August Sarah posted on Twitter that she had left David, saying "I chose to leave, my mental health and my ability to parent are the most important."

Now, she's pulling back the curtain a bit more and revealed that she's been the victim of gaslighting, narcissism and abuse. She claims that she's been called fat and disgusting and that she has had it.

From her social media:

November 4th is going to go down as the very last day that I will ever have to hear someone say to me "just look at you, you're fat and disgusting!"

It will be the last time I'm told I'm ugly, it will be the last day of mental annguish that I have to face at the hands of someone who swore they loved me.

No more gaslighting, narcissism, abuse or control.

The ugly cry has happened and it was harsher than hars.

The realization that I subjected myself to so much negativity is beyond comprehension.

Hindsight and the recent support and love of a group of women has changed the way I will forever see my worth. I have come out of this a changed and raw but empowered as fuck individual and I swear to Christ I will never allow myself to ever go back to the person I was.
