So, when exactly are we going to be getting the news of an Auston Matthews contact extension?
The Leafs continue to be in a tight spot against the salary cap, especially after the offseason signings of Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, Ryan Reaves and John Klingberg. And that's without new deals for both Matthews and fellow pending UFA William Nylander.
Needless to say, new Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is in a very tight spot financially, and will have some pretty monumental decisions to make moving forward. But could we soon be seeing the news of a Matthews contract extension?

If this report were to hold true, it would make Matthews the highest paid player in the NHL with an AAV of $13 million, overtaking both Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.
