After having put the finishing touches on their 4-3 overtime victory over the New York Islanders at UBS Arena last night, the Detroit Red Wings once again find themselves at the top of the National Hockey League in a key statistical category.
While their power play has cooled off a bit after having been ranked 1st overall in the first handful of games this season, the fact that they are getting consistent production out of their defensemen hasn't gone unnoticed by the League's stat keepers.
In fact, thanks to a pair of assists from Moritz Seider along with a goal and assist from Jake Walman, the 33 total points by the Red Wings defense is good for 1st overall out of the 32 NHL teams.
The duo of Seider and Walman, which was ranked the best in hockey by the metrics last season, has accounted for 14 points combined. Seider has scored while adding nine assists, while Walman has scored twice while adding three assists. Additionally, newcomer Shayne Gostisbehere has added three goals with six assists, and has been an invaluable addition to the power play.
Justin Holl, who is in his first year with the Red Wings after coming over from the division rival Toronto Maple Leafs, has three assists in the eight games that he's played in along with boasting a +7 rating. At one point, it was good for best in the NHL. Ben Chiarot has scored a goal and added an assist, while Olli Maatta and Jeff Petry, the latter of whom is also in his first year with Detroit, have added a pair of assists each.
As one of the highest scoring teams in hockey, the Red Wings are turning more than a few heads to start the year, fueling speculation that it could potentially signal the end of their lengthy playoff drought.
The Red Wings bring in the Florida Panthers to Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.
