The 2023-24 NHL season is quickly approaching, and the Detroit Red Wings will soon be hitting the ice for the exhibition schedule with several new faces on the roster and a renewed hope among the fan base that the rebuilding process will take a significant step forward this year.
New to the Red Wings this year include the likes of Alex DeBrincat, J.T. Compher, Justin Holl, Shayne Gostisbehere, Klim Kostin, James Reimer, Jeff Petry, and Daniel Sprong. Are the additions going to be enough to propel the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016?
According to a rather grim prediction from ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, not even close. In his official Atlantic Division standings outlook, Detroit will finish 6th out of the seven teams, ahead of only the Montreal Canadiens.
That’s quite the rough outlook. As you know, competition remains extremely stiff in the Atlantic, with the Lightning still a dangerous squad despite having lost several key pieces. Meanwhile, the Leafs are expected to continue to be a force in the East as long as their core remains intact, while the Sabres and Senators continue their rises.
Is this a completely unfair prediction, or are the Red Wings actually still years away from being a playoff team despite entering Year Five of the “Yzerplan”?
