For the second consecutive season, the Detroit Red Wings will be without forward Robby Fabbri as their regular season schedule winds down to a close.
Fabbri, who has a long history of leg ailments including three separate ACL tears, suffered another lower body injury earlier this month against the Chicago Blackhawks. While the good news is that it wasn't yet another ACL tear, it was significant enough to have kept him out of action since then.
“I think we’re going to have news here the next couple of days. I don’t expect him back the rest of the year,” head coach Derek Lalonde said. “I think it’s more of a cautious approach with him, looking more towards next year.”
Fabbri didn't make his season debut for the Red Wings until January, owing to his recovery from offseason surgery. And according to Lalonde, he may need to go under the knife once more.
“But I don’t think it’s going to be an aggressive-type surgery,” Lalonde said. “If there is, I think it’s going to be a clean-up type thing, but they’re still in the process of figuring it out.”
Unfortunately, the Red Wings are now all but mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for a 7th straight year after having briefly occupied a Wild Card postseason spot late last month.
In the 28 games that Fabbri played in this season, he lit the lamp seven times along with adding nine assists and 22 PIM. In 330 career NHL games split between the St. Louis Blues and Red Wings, he's racked up a total of 80 goals with 88 assists.
He's in the first season of a three year, $12 million extension he inked with Detroit.
