Red Wings 2nd round 2019 draft pick may ditch them

Doesn't appear as though he'll be suiting up in Detroit.

The Detroit Red Wings made forward Robert Mastrosimone their 2nd overall selection (54th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft, and he's suited up for both Boston University and Arizona State University the past four seasons, scoring a total of 25 goals and 50 assists in 121 games played between the two schools.

However, it sounds as though eventually suiting up in the Motor City for the Red Wings is no longer in his future plans. According to comments made by Arizona State head coach Greg Powers, Mastrosimone donning the Winged Wheel "doesn't" look like it will happen.

“He’s playing the waiting game and seeing what’s going to be available as a free agent," Powers said during a recent interview with PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan. "There’s a lot of teams that are interested in him, but it doesn’t look like Detroit is going to happen. It’s just a waiting game, but he has the option to come back. It’s a good option, and he’s open to it.”

With 42 points in 38 games played, Mastrosimone was the leading scorer for the Sun Devils last season.

“He’s going to be here all summer, and I think he’s probably going to enroll and leave that as an option," Powers continued. "It’s not something that we’re going to know about for a while. I know he wants to get a contract and play pro hockey and I’m confident that can happen for him, but this is going to remain an option."

“We have models built where he’s coming back and we have models if he doesn’t but when he makes that decision, he has a home. If it happens, he’s just going to be an unbelievable cherry on top if it happens.”

The Red Wings certainly have a lengthy influx of young talent in their pipeline, but it looks as though Mastrosimone won't be a part of it.
