The New York Rangers are focused on having a long playoff run this spring, but they are starting off with making a splash first on the trade market. Adam Proteau of The Hockey News does not rule out that the Rangers could acquire a high-impact performer such as Chicago Blackhawks star winger Patrick Kane thanks to their $5.2 million in cap space available at the deadline.

The Rangers have also been linked to San Jose Sharks’ Timo Meier and Vancouver Canucks captain Bo Horvat, two pending free agents that could eventually sign up long term in NYC.

On top of that, Proteau points out that general manager Chris Drury has four first-round picks in the next three entry drafts (three of his own and Dallas’ first-rounder this summer) and he believes the GM won’t mind giving one of them up in a trade for “a proven NHLer.” The reporter does not have an issue stating that “with less than six weeks left before the trade deadline, Drury will be one of the GMs who could make the biggest splash on the trade front.”

This will be interesting to see what Drury chooses to do with the trade baits he has to dangle to selling teams, which includes 2020 No. 1-overall pick Alexis Lafreniere who is likely to benefit from a change of scenery. He’s been feeling the pressure in the Big Apple and a new start elsewhere, amongst a team that will allow him to evolve might be what the doctor ordered.

New York is known to be the city that never sleeps and with the trade deadline fast approaching, we bet Drury will be up most nights attempting to make a monster move for his Rangers, who are now in win mode for the Stanley Cup.
