After a humiliating loss against Washington

The New York Rangers were coming off a 5-3 home win over the Islanders on Thursday before the Christmas break, but failed to keep a streak going… Head coach Gerard Gallant will not accept the excuse of the four-day break, he told it like it is after the 4-0 shoutout loss at the hands of the Washington Capitals.

“We were garbage tonight,” Gallant said bluntly per the New York Post. “We didn’t deserve to win. [The refs] had nothing to do with us losing, trust me.”

While some fans might have wanted to - once again - blame NHL officiating, Gallant will have none of it and the same goes for captain Jacob Trouba.

“It is what it is, it’s out of your control,” Trouba said. “Calls go both ways. I think that’s an easy copout to blame someone else for something. We know we didn’t play a good game here today.”

Heading into the second half of the 2022-23 season, the Rangers need to stay on track and establish themselves as contenders. They had won eight of nine and four straight at home.

They need to play better to not only become top contenders for the postseason and a long playoff run, but also if they want to remain on top of the Patrick Kane sweepstakes. Many trade suggestions have been reported that could materialize closer to the March 3rd deadline.

Talks have linked the Chicago Blackhawks’ star to NYC for months now, especially when he expressed his desire to reunite with forward Artemi Panarin, but teams are well too aware that Kane will only move out of Chicago if he has a clear shot at the Stanley Cup, and if New York wants to be his destination, the Rangers need to win and not be “garbage.”

Am I right, coach?
