Rangers closing in on new deal with Will Borgen.
The newest member of the New York Rangers roster may soon have a new contract as well.
The New York Rangers are set to cash in after a big trade earlier in the season.
According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers are on the verge of signing recently acquired defenseman Will Borgen to a brand new contract. According to Friedman, Borgen's new deal will be a 5 year deal that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $4.1 million per season.
Borgen was of course acquired by the Rangers as part of the return for sending former Rangers first round pick Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken in a trade, the Rangers also received a third round pick and a sixth round pick as a part of that deal, and it has been a trade that has worked out very well for the Rangers thus far.
Since the trade the Rangers have drastically turned their season around and although it would be unfair to credit Borgen for all of that, he has definitely played his role in the Rangers reversal of fortunes. Borgen's strong defensive play against difficult matchups as well as the level of physicality he brings to games have had a clear impact on the Rangers performance on the ice.
The man he was traded for has also shined since the trade with Kakko picking up 4 goals and 9 assists for 13 points in just 16 games with the Kraken, and this may be one of those rare cases where everyone involved in this trade comes out looking like a winner.
