The Montreal Canadiens are pretty crowded on defense with Mike Matheson, Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris and Arber Xhekaj all having legitimate claims on spots for the foreseeable future. For many insiders and reporters, it leaved Joel Edmundson out. Despite the fact that Edmundson would like to stay in Montreal, several rumours have emerged that could see Edmundson traded and one specific transaction has been suggested by Habs insider Marc-Antoine Godin of The Athletic.

Godin believes that three teams are to watch out for when it comes to having interest in acquiring the blue liner. He points to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Los Angeles Kings and New York Islanders as potential suitors. As for the latter, he even suggests that monster trade, wondering if the Islanders could offer up Josh Bailey, a first-round pick in next year’s draft, along with a second round pick in this upcoming draft in return for Edmundson. The Canadiens would retain half of his $3,500,000 salary for the last year of his deal.

Considering all the young defensemen fighting for a spot on the Canadiens roster, it could be a good idea to trade Edmundson at this moment to make room in the defensive squad and give youngsters a chance to assert themselves in the lineup.

As for Bailey, he could take on a similar role played by Sean Monahan this past season, being a good veteran in the dressing room in addition to a deep forward that is capable of helping the Top-9 up front.

Would you make this deal?
