Like Chicago Blackhawks teammate Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews has yet to make any decisions about his immediate future. The clock is however ticking and now he may have scared some interested teams away.
According to insider Frank Seravalli, there is a new problem in Toews’ situation, despite the fact that some clubs, including the Winnipeg Jets, Seattle Kraken, Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals and Colorado Avalanche have shown interest in the Hawks’ captain. This is what Seravalli writes about the situation:
“Toews’ recent illness has certainly raised an eyebrow on the trade market. He hasn’t skated in six consecutive days and won’t play in either game of their back-to-back set this weekend. Typically, that wouldn’t be concerning, but Toews missed the entire 2020-21 season with long-COVID related effects. How will he bounce back now? Kane and Toews share the same agent, so nothing has heated up quite yet on the trade front. Toews used to be known as the stingy, difficult to play against center and unshakeable leader. He’s really slowed down of late. There will still be interest given his pedigree, track record and the hope that a new environment will provide him a shot in the arm.”
Toews missed the entire 2021 season after he was diagnosed with chronic immune response syndrome. The Blackhawks haven’t specified that it’s related to that. However, the Hawks placed him on injured reserve, retroactive to Feb 7, today, per team insider Ben Pope.
However, interested teams are getting more and more worried it could be the syndrome bring Toews down again, and we can understand that they wouldn’t want to give up assets if the Hawks’ captain won’t be able to play.
Everyone is keeping a close eye on this problem emerging just weeks before the trade deadline.
The clock is ticking…
