The Boston Bruins were forced into a situation you certainly do not see everyday on Saturday regarding their situation in between the pipes.
After Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask left Saturday afternoon's game against the New York Rangers early with dehydration, the Bruins turned to an old friend in 50-year old goaltending coach Bob Essensa, to dress as emergency backup to second stringer Niklas Svedberg.
Essensa started 67 games for the Winnipeg Jets in 1992-93. He last saw NHL action in 2001-02 when he played nine games with the Buffalo Sabres and notched a 2.91 goals against average and .850 save percentage. He played for 12 seasons in the NHL for seven different franchises.
Essensa jokingly told Matt Kalman of The Bruins Blog:
"They barely got me under the [salary] cap. We were negotiating for half a period."
This is similar to the situation the Florida Panthers were put in earlier in the season, where goalie coach Rob Tallas was nearly thrust in action after the Cats lost their top two goalies to injury in the same game.
Pretty hilarious.
