Paul Maurice chirps modern NHL players for being too soft.
Paul Maurice gets real about the current players in the NHL and fans are on his side.
Are the players that are currently playing in the modern era of the National Hockey League a little too soft? One head coach in the National Hockey League appeared to hint at exactly that, although he did stop short of using the word "soft" himself.
Recently Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice, who coaches one of the grittier teams in the NHL, was asked about the art of chirping in the NHL and he expressed regret about the fact that it appears to be a lost art among the more modern players in the league.
"It's almost completely disappeared," lamented Maurice. "They aren't as funny as they used to be, they used to be really, really funny."
There was no question that Maurice wasn't happy about the way that chirping has evolved, or perhaps devolved, over the years.
"It's a completely a lost art," said Maurice. "Kind of sad actually, some of the chirps are so bad and so sad."
Maurice was asked about the worst chirp he's ever heard.
"You're not good at hockey," Maurice responded. "You gotta do better than that."
When asked why he thought things were this way, Maurice placed the blame squarely at the feet of the players currently in the NHL.
"I think they are nicer people," said Maurice. "They are better humans. The players are far better humans than they were 30 years ago."
It was clear that Maurice had more to say on the topic but didn't want to push the envelope too far and stopped himself short of giving a full answer a few times. That being said, his comments have been extremely well received by fans who have expressed seemingly unanimous agreement with his take.
With that in mind I would love to hear what you think of Maurice's recent comments, let me know your thoughts in the comments.
