Former NHL forward Paul Bissonnette is known to make bold statements and he did again when he predicted where Patrick Kane will ended being traded on the air of the Spittin Chiclets podcast.
Bissonnette is adamant that Kane will end up with the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s easy to understand why the Leafs would want a guy like Kane, especially when it comes to the postseason. Toronto can’t seem to reach the second round…. The last time the Maple Leafs got beyond the first round was back in 2004 and Biz believes Kane who has won 3 Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks could definitely help the Leafs reach the ultimate prize.
”The rumblings have started and people are going to talk about the cap space as well, you’re gonna see the greatest, as it stands, U.S. hockey player to ever play the game, pass the torch to Auston Matthews in his final couple seasons.” He added, ”He’s going to probably re-sign after the $10 million he’s making and take a hometown discount just like [Mark] Giordano did, just like everybody else.”
There’s been rumblings that Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas has already spoken to Hawks GM Kyle Davidson about a potential trade.
While Bissonnette makes the bold prediction, he did point out the issue of cap space in Toronto. Kane makes $10.5 million this season and even at half of his salary retained by the Blackhawks, the Maple Leafs simply cannot fit him under their cap without moving other pieces or a third team getting involved in a three-way transaction. Toronto is $1.4 million over the cap with a contract still pending for restricted free agent Rasmus Sandin.
Kane’s no-movement clause gives him the power to decide where he wants to be moved. And you have to wonder if he’d choose Toronto?
Bissonnette’s idea is fun in theory but will it happen for real.
