Not what they were hoping for.

NHL forward Alex Chiasson spent a very brief period of time with the Detroit Red Wings, and proved that he could still hack it in the world's best League. In the 20 games that he played wearing the Winged Wheel in 2022-23, he scored six goals - a pace of 24 goals over a full 82 game schedule. He also scored nine goals in 24 games with the AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

However, Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman elected not to retain Chiasson despite his positive and productive power play output. Chiasson would then take his talents to a Red Wings division rival in the Boston Bruins, agreeing to a professional tryout agreement. Unfortunately, Chiasson landing a contract with Boston wasn't meant to be, as he was released from the tryout this week.

The reason for Chiasson's being cut simply came down to numbers.

“I think [Chiasson] came up short. It’s just that a lot of guys are having really good camps and it comes down to numbers,” said Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery of the decision to part ways with Chiasson.

Chiasson wasn't the only former Red Wings player to be delivered bad news. Forward Mitchell Stephens, who played 27 games for the Red Wings in 2021-22 and registered six assists, was waived by the Montreal Canadiens - another division and Original 6 rival of Detroit's. He's been subsequently sent down to their respective AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket.

We can expect to see more NHL teams make roster cuts as the regular season draws closer.
