P.K. Subban remains unsigned, though talks heat up that he could find a place on a roster ahead of training camps. Earlier this summer, Subban’s agent pointed out how the defenseman will make a decision on where he will play soon.
Chatter has linked him to the Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs and even his former team, the Montreal Canadiens. However, a new contender has entered and fans are stunned to find out that it is the Boston Bruins.
Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now believes the Bruins could use Subban, especially with the team “lacking experienced depth on both sides of their blue line with right-shot defenseman Charlie McAvoy (shoulder), likely out until December and left-shot Matt Grzelcyk (shoulder), out until at least November.”
The Bruins are currently $2.2 million over the $82.5 million salary cap, but they’ll be able to place McAvoy, Grzelcyk as and winger Brad Marchand (hip) on long-term injury reserve to get under the cap.
And Subban should come cheap. He could even be convinced to sign a low-risk, one-year deal worth $750,000, especially with the clock ticking out ahead of the season.
Fans think however it would be shocking to see Subban in a Bruins’ uniform seeing that he’s been a top rival in Boston as it first started when he was part of the Habs’ lineup. Remember the times he nailed Marchand? Or scored in the Bruins’ net?
It’d be interesting to see Subban joined a team that once despised him. But he could be of help in Boston especially with the lack depth on both sides of their back end.
With the Devils in 2019-20, Subban wasn’t the offensive blue liner fans knew him to be, putting up 18 points in 68 games of the COVID-shortened season. He sort of bounced back the following season, putting up 19 points in 44 games, and last year, he had 22 points in 77 games.
He could be out to prove everyone he’s still has gas in the tank and he could do it in Boston.
