Specualtion isn’t going to stop in Toronto and across the hockey world until the Maple Leafs re-sign or trade forward William Nylander. While the ongoing uncertainty over Nylander’s future in Toronto has fans and pundits wondering if he could be traded this season, it seems that one team has already been ruled out.

According to The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford, a transaction is impossible for the St. Louis Blues as defenseman Colton Parayko was once linked to the Maple Leafs in a one-for-one trade for Nylander.

“[A]s I’ve written in the past, the Parayko-Nylander ship likely sailed a long time ago, and it’s just one of those rumors that won’t go away."

Another trade scenario emerged involving Blues veteran blue liner Torey Krug as the centerpiece might tempt GM Brad Treliving and the Leafs, but this was Rutherford’s answer:

“ Toronto isn’t making this trade even if Krug’s healthy. Nylander is a 40-goal scorer who nearly had 90 points last year. The rest of the package doesn’t even matter. If the Maple Leafs can’t re-sign him and decide to move him, they’ll have much better offers.”

Not to mention both Parayko and Krug have their respective no-trade clauses. You may remember that the latter used his NTC to spike a trade in June that would’ve sent him to the Philadelphia Flyers. He could do it again when it comes to Toronto.

Let’s also not forget that it appears that Krug will be out until Oct. 1 with an injured foot, and there is no way, with this injury history, that he could fetch a talented forward like Nylander.

And so, fans need to return to the ongoing situation in Toronto where Nylander reportedly wants to stay and where Treliving is working at keeping him here.
