Oilers officially add a new goalie on Monday morning.
The Edmonton Oilers have a new goaltender, signing him to a two-year deal on Monday morning.
Over the weekend I reported on a rumor floating around that suggested the Edmonton Oilers were on the verge of signing a new goaltender. Well consider it a rumor no longer, as the Oilers have now made it official.
On Monday morning, the Oilers announced the signing of 21 year old goaltender Connor Ungar to a new two year contract. The deal, and entry level contract, is Ungar's first in the National Hockey League as he was an undrafted prospect playing OUA hockey at Brock University.
As I mentioned in my initial report in this matter, it isn't entirely clear when Ungar managed to find his way onto the Oilers radar but there's little doubt that his most recent season with Brock University played a significant role.
This season, Ungar recorded an impressive .932 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average over the course of 26 games played. A total of just 56 pucks managed to make their way past Ungar this season, a performance that was strong enough to earn him an NHL deal.
Ungar won't be rushed up to the NHL level however and will instead be assigned to the American Hockey League where he is expected to debut with the Bakersfield Condors.
Definitely a name to keep an eye on in the relatively near future.
