Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are still star in Edmonton, but the fact remains that the Oilers have a greater than 50 percent chance of missing the playoffs.
Last night, the Oilers managed to blow a 2-0 lead against the Seattle Kraken to fall 5-2 and wasted away crucial points against division opponents.
Fans have been calling for weeks for general manager Ken Holland to do something, especially hinting at added help on the blue line seeing that things are a disaster in between the pipes. However, the GM has failed to provide quality depth outside the Oilers’ top six and keeps using the excuse that the salary cap has been a problem, neglecting to say how bridged defenseman Darnell Nurse and forced himself into overpaying on this deal…
Something needs to happen in Edmonton, and while we all keep waiting on Holland, the players themselves had enough and, according to insider Mark Spector, they call a players only meeting on Wednesday.
While it could boost the roster, Spector points out that the Oilers could face a significant issue in the dressing room:
“As new voices try to fill the void left by the departures of Mike Smith, Duncan Keith and Kris Russell, the challenges of demanding accountability fall to new people.”
It’s been reported in the past that McDavid has improved in his leadership role and has been more vocal with his teammates. However, with Nurse not looking like the $9.25-million, top-pairing defenseman he’s paid to be, he should at least be a voice in the dressing room and guide his teammates in desperate times like these.
Let’s see what impact the talk between teammates has on the Oilers, especially ahead of Thursday’s game against the visiting New York Islanders.
