Oilers get some salary cap relief from the NHL

After playing down a man due to lack of cap space, the Oilers get a freebie from the league.

This just in, the Edmonton Oilers have recalled forward Noah Philp from the AHL's Bakersfield Condors on an emergency basis.

The Oilers were forced to play one man short yesterday in their 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks as they didn't have the salary cap space to make an AHL call up. Because of this the NHL has allowed an 'emergency exception' that allows them to call up Philp for $0.

As you might imagine, fans of rival teams are calling BS on this ruling from the NHL but it's a pretty clear case of the team simply taking advantage of the rules already in place. While it may not seem fair, the NHL rules state that a team can make an emergency recall once they play a game with fewer than a 23 man roster.
