Oilers destroy goalie trade options and rethink transaction!

Is this the right call?

When Jack Campbell was sent down to the Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League and the Edmonton Oilers were looking at options to fix their goaltending issues, also thanks to an inconsistent Stuart Skinner, different options emerged for general manager Ken Holland. He was allegedly interested in Philadelphia Flyers’ Carter Hart and Anaheim Ducks’ John Gibson.

Then, the Oilers started winning and outscoring their opponents by quite a lot, and it sounds like Holland might look away from the teams he’s been scouting lately.

According to Jim Parsons of the Hockey Writers, after beating the Flyers 5-2 on Thursday and humiliating Gibson and the Ducks in a 7-2 win on Sunday, the Oilers may ditch the plan to go after these two previous targets. The same could be said for the rest of the month as Edmonton will face other teams that have netminders available for trade in the Detroit Red Wings (James Reimer), Montreal Canadiens (Jake Allen), Columbus Blue Jackets (Elvis Merzlikins) and Calgary Flames (Jacob Markstrom). The Oilers might then decide to get their assets, especially if they keep on the right track.

“The problem for the Oilers is the rumored cost to acquire a goalie right now. It’s high and why would Edmonton give up assets for a goalie they potentially make look silly?”

The Oilers can count on Skinner, and Calvin Pickard has proven to be a credible backup for the team. On top of that, Edmonton can always call up prospect Olivier Rodrigue, who’s been arguably the best goalie in the AHL at the moment.

It looks like the Oilers might already have the solution in front of the net, and could therefore focus the trade shopping elsewhere on the roster.

Now, let’s see if I potentially jinxed the Oilers and the netminding woes started up again…
