The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly working to get a trade done ahead of next Friday’s deadline, and it looks like things just got more serious. According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, “Edmonton’s 2024 1st round pick is in play” as he reports that the Oilers have discussed packaging it with a roster player to another club for a defenseman to upgrade their blue line.

Earlier on Thursday, insider Pierre LeBrun revealed how the Oilers were one of the last teams still in the mix to acquire defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames, and reportedly offered their first round pick, along with defenseman Cody Ceci, in attempts to acquire Tanev. As you know, he is now a Star.

When it comes to targeting a defenseman, the Oilers reportedly have eyes on Sean Walker and Nick Seeler of the Philadelphia Flyers. It has been said that the former could command a first-round pick on the market.

General manager Ken Holland is also believed to be shopping for a boost up front, and though Pittsburgh Penguins top forward Jake Guentzel looks to be too expensive to acquire, the Oilers have turned their attention to St. Louis Blues winger Pavel Buchnevich, Anaheim Ducks forward Adam Henrique and Frank Vatrano, Seattle Kraken winger Jordan Eberle, and San Jose forward Anthony Duclair.

If Edmonton is seriously about packing their first round pick in a deal, there is no doubt the team will need to move out a roster player in order to accommodate the salary cap. Defencsmen Brett Kulak and Ceci, along with forward Warren Foegele have been considered trade bait candidates for a pending transaction.

There’s only one week to go Ken…
