Today, on the opening day of Toronto Maple Leafs' training camp, forward William Nylander took some time to address the rumors swirling in media that he's seeking a fresh start elsewhere in the NHL once his contract is up.
Nylander's $6.9 million annual contract expires next summer and he's slated to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career unless the Leafs can sign him to an extension beforehand.
According to TSN insider Chris Johnston, Nylander reiterated to reporters today that his desire is to remain with the Leafs and to sign a long-term deal with the team. He also said he won't be taking any more questions regarding his contract status at this time.
From Johnston:
I mean... what else is he going to say?
"Nah... man... I'm outta here first chance I get!"
I don't think so.
The fact of the matter is that every pending free agent says some form of this while in negotiations. I wouldn't be surprised if Nylander ends up extending before the puck even drops on the season, no sense extending this drama into the regular season.
