The National Hockey League has finally decided to do something about slew-footing… On Thursday night, San Jose Sharks’ Kevin Labanc was caught slewing-footing St. Louis Blues forward Tyler Bozak.
On Friday, he was called in for a hearing and later on, the Players’ department of safety announced that Labanc has been suspended one game for his slew foot on Bozak.
Labanc was assessed a two-minute minor for tripping on the play as Bozak crashed dangerously into the boards feet first.
Since the start of the season, New Jersey Devils’ P.K. Subban has been making the slew-foot quick famous. Earlier this week, New York Rangers’ Sammy Blais was seriously injured on a play involving Subban. The Rangers’ player was hit by what could be called a slew foot from Subban - yes another one - and went down awkwardly. He could be heard yelling in pain on the ice.
This is not the first time this season Subban has been caught using this dangerous move on opponents. Monday night’s play on Blais was very close to the same play that took place in a preseason game on enforcer Ryan Reaves. Then, Subban pulled the same move on Milan Lucic of the Calgary Flames, and Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks. The league fined Subban $5,000 for the Lucic slew-foot. When he did the same to Zegras, George Parros opted to hand out another fine, this time for $15,000. Basically pocket of change for the defenseman making $9M per year.
He has yet to be suspended for that move, and now it’s Labanc who pays up…
Subban better feel lucky.
