NHL set to punish team for illegal trade last year.

The National Hockey League is set to hand down punishment over what is looking more and more like an illegal trade.

On Saturday night, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the NHL would be coming down on the Ottawa Senators following their handling of the trade of forward Evgeny Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights. There was much controversy surrounding a trade involving Dadonov last season, one in which the aforementioned Golden Knights attempted to send Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks, and it seems as though the Senators may be to blame for that error.

"When [Vegas] acquired him from the Ottawa Senators they were told that Dadonov had not submitted his trade request in on time so if Vegas wanted to move him they could do whatever they needed to do," revealed Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada.

Dadonov had a list of teams that he would not accept a trade to negotiated into his contract and it would appear as though the Ottawa Senators were not entirely upfront about whether or not Dadonov had actually submitted such a list.

"That wasn't the case, he had submitted it," added Friedman. "The reason its relevant now is because sometime in the next few days the NHL is going to announce some sort of punishment to the Senators for that situation."

It also appears as though we will know more about what exactly transpired as the NHL will look to absolve Vegas of blame in what was an ugly situation.

"I think we're going to get a clear explanation of what occurred and why Vegas wasn't at fault."
