The National Hockey League and its Department of Player Safety have just announced that Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak has been suspended for two games for elbowing Buffalo Sabres’ Kyle Okposo.
According to insider Frank Seravalli, this is the first NHL player suspended in 63 days.
The incident took place along the wall at the Lightning blue line with 1:37 left in the third period of Buffalo’s 6-5 overtime win in Tampa. Cernak did not receive a penalty on the play.
Okposo stayed on the bench but did not take another shift.
The Sabres’ bench isn’t happy after no penalty was called.
Cernak will miss the matchup against the Red Wings in Detroit on Saturday, and then the contest in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. The blue liner has put up a goals and 11 points, along with a +1 rating, in 51 games this season.
