New scenario emerges for Patrick Kane with latest update

Many reporters and insiders believe free agent forward Patrick will sign a new contract prior to Thanksgiving weekend as he’s reportedly lined up different meetings with head coaches and general managers this week.

The 35-year-old has already met with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and more teams are in the mix, including Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers as potential landing spots.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently pointed ou that the Panthers were being particularly aggressive in their attempt to sign Kane to a deal.

However, a new situation that has emerged in Buffalo could result in the Sabres getting quite serious in trying to convince Kane to come home and signed with his hometown club.

On Tuesday night, it was confirmed by head coach Don Granato that star Tage Thompson is likely to miss several weeks with an injury suffered in the game against the Boston Bruins. It was a tough contest for the young forward, who actually suffered a pair of ailments that night. First, he was ruled questionable to return after he left with discomfort once he got dumped by Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy. Thompson ended up coming back only to take a shot to the hand area shortly after and had to leave once again, this time for good.

That’s when Granato confirmed the bad news that Thompson is expected to miss long-term action.

This prompted hosts of the Cam and Strick podcast, Andy Strickland and Cam Janssen, to wonder if the Sabres could get Kane to come in to fill in the void and then see the team rise even more to playoff contention once Thompson returns.

Kane has expressed in the past his desire to return to Buffalo, though he has made a priority in joining a Stanley Cup contender. The Sabres currently sit in seventh place of the Atlantic division with just 15 points ahead of Wednesday’s action. However, Buffalo is in a unique position to be able to sign him to a multi-year contract thanks to their available cap space, more than $6 million. This could allow more than one chance for Kane to get that fourth championship ring before hanging up the skates.

As of Tuesday night, it was reported that one team had been crossed out out of contention, Kane’s former club, the New York Rangers, who had previously been linked to the forward.

That does not mean there isn’t a scenario where he ends up in the state of New York, back home with the Sabres…
