It sounds like we have a new contender in the Patrick Kane sweepstakes, one that could send the veteran free agent to Florida. The 2023-24 season is now underway, but Kane is expected to keep a close eye on the action as he keeps recovering from hip resurfacing surgery he underwent in June.
It was recently suggested the Detroit Red Wings as a destination, while the Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes were already in the mix, but now Sportsnet’s Elliotte reports on his “32 Thoughts” podcast that the Panthers are also interested and apparently aggressively chasing the free agent.
“I think the Panthers are one of the teams that really wants Patrick Kane, I’ve heard that they were very, very aggressive in making it known they were interested. I think Patrick Kane when he’s ready is going to pick his team based on how everybody looks.”
Kane is looking to join a Stanley Cup contender in order to get another shot at the championship before retirement and the Panthers could fit that bill. They also have deep pockets and could look to add more offense to their roster as Kane’s leadership and three championship rings could also make a difference in the Florida dressing room just months after their upset-filled Cinderella-like run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Kane will keep following the action to determine where he will end up and might pay close attention to the Panthers after Friedman’s reports.
