This kid can’t be stopped. Does he have the potential to be the greatest Leaf in history?

Just 87 regular season games into his NHL career, Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews already has 10 game winning goals to his credit. By comparison, it took Leafs legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Mats Sundin 116 games to reach the same mark with the Leafs. Keep in mind, Matthews is just 19 years old, whereas Sundin didn’t arrive in Toronto until he was 23 years old.
While Matthews still has a ways to go to match Sundin’s all-time Leafs record of 79 game winners, he looks to be on the right track. The sophomore superstar has started the 2017-18 season on fire with five goals and eight points in his first five games. The 2016-17 Calder Trophy winner certainly hasn’t suffered from the dreaded sophomore slump in year two and looks poised to establish himself as one of the NHL’s elite players.
What’s a realistic expectation for Matthews this season? His 40 goals and 69 points from last season may just be the tip of the iceberg. Can he hit 50 goals? How about 80 points? The sky is the limit for this kid. Get hyped, Leafs fans.
