Monster trade pitch for Oilers to land Erik Karlsson!

If you’re Ken Holland, do you do it?

We are all aware that the Edmonton Oilers have zeroed in on San Jose Sharks’ Erik Karlsson especially after players confronted general manager Ken Holland in order to get a puck-moving defenseman ahead of the March 3rd deadline.

On top of that, Jason Gregor of TSN 1260 revealed how the Oilers made an offer to the Sharks in order to acquire Karlsson on Tuesday.

This prompted Sportsnet’s Jason Bukala to suggest a monster trade that reveals what the Oilers might have to offer to land Karlsson. This is what he put together:

The Trade

Oilers Get:
Erik Karlsson: $11.5 million cap hit; contract expires after 2026-27 season
(40 per cent salary retained: $4.6 million through 2026-27)
Remaining cap hit for Karlsson: $6.9 million through 2026-27
(Reminder: Karlsson deal has full no-movement clause)
5th-round pick in 2024

Sharks get:
Tyson Barrie : $4.5 million cap hit; contract expires after 2023-24 season
Warren Foegele : $2.75 million cap hit; contract expires after 2023-24 season
Evan Bouchard : $864,000 cap hit; pending RFA this summer
Edmonton’s 1st-round pick in 2023 NHL Draft
Edmonton’s 2nd-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft
(Note: The Oilers have Jason Demers and Markus Niemelainen available for recall from Bakersfield.)

Are Other Teams in the Mix?
Short answer: I’m confident saying NO.

There is it!

It was obvious that a way to get out of taking Karlsson’ full salary cap would be implied. He carries an $11.5-million dollar cap hit through 2026-27.

But Edmonton might have to make this blockbuster trade to finally come out on top. With 14 NHL seasons under his belt, including six playoff trips, Karlsson would be a great addition to the Oilers’ dressing room.

If you’re Holland, do you make this deal suggested by Bukala?
