Mikko Rantanen has finally been traded and lands huge extension!
The one we’ve all best waiting for. 🚨 TRADE ALERT! Details down below:
It was touch and go for a while, but the Carolina Hurricanes have finally been able to flip Mikko Rantanen.
Earlier this morning, it was reported that he Carolina Hurricanes had a framework of a deal in place that would send Rantanen to the Stars.
Now, according to Elliotte Friedman, the Dallas Stars are closing in on an extension for Rantanen, who’d be getting 8 years, $12M AAV, which is a lot of money in a state with no income tax.
TRADE DETAILS:
Per Jeff Marek, this is what the return looks like from the Stars to the Hurricanes in this second Rantanen trade this season:
"Sounds like the basis of the return for Mikko Rantanen when they get the deal done will be Logan Stankoven and two first-round picks."
Pierre LeBrun added: "Rantanen going to Dallas for Logan Stankovan and two first-round picks, plus some smaller pieces in the deal as well."
The smaller pieces are believed to be two third round picks, one in 2026 and the other in 2027, going to Carolina as well.
The former Colorado Avalanche superstar was reportedly offered a lucrative contract offer by the Hurricanes during the 4 Nations Face-Off, exceeding the $100 million mark. Rantanen was given some time to provide Carolina with an answer, though he is said to have turned down the deal. He was acquired by the Hurricanes in a shocking mid-season monster trade deal that caught absolutely everyone off guard, including Rantanen himself.
For the past days, it was looking more and more like Rantanen only wanted to hit free agency this summer, but now, with a hefty deal with Dallas, he can rest easy this summer, after a playoff run with the impressive Stars.
In 13 games with the Hurricanes since joining the club on a significant trade at the end of January, Rantanen has collected two goals and four assists for six points. He has 27 goals and 43 points for 70 points in 62 games total this season.
