McDavid gives unbelievable excuse for loss in Game 1.
Connor McDavid had an unbelievable reason for why the Oilers may have lost Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.
You can hardly blame the Edmonton Oilers for walking away from Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and feeling like they should have probably earned the win over the Florida Panthers. In spite of dominating much of the play on the ice however, the Oilers would fall short, losing the game by a score of 3-0 despite out shooting the Panthers 32-17 over the course of 3 periods.
It was a record-setting performance from Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky that would prove to be the difference, with Bobrovsky stopping all 32 shots he faced on his way to a shutout in Game 1,
When asked about the difficult loss however, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid had a bit of a different theory on why the Oilers might have lost Game 1. The Oilers captain hinted at the fact that there may have been some karma in the air for the Oilers on Saturday night, with a little balancing of the scales coming from none other than the hockey gods.
"Maybe it was the hockey gods getting us back for that Game 6," said McDavid briefly forcing a smile. "You know where we probably didn't deserve to win."
McDavid is of course referencing Game 6 of the Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars, a game that mirrored Game 1 between the Oilers and Panthers in many ways. In that game the Stars outshot the Oilers by an even wider margin, 34-10, but it would be the Oilers who would walk away with the victory despite the onslaught from the Stars.
"Tonight maybe we deserved at least one goal, maybe two goals, and we don't find a way to get them," said McDavid.
Despite having drawn the ire of the hockey gods, McDavid is still confident he and his teammates will be able to triumph in this series.
"I know this group will stick with it, bounce back, that's what we take a lot of pride in doing," said McDavid. "We'll gear up for a big one on Monday."
