The 2023 NHL Draft class was a great one despite everyone expecting Connor Bedard to be selected first overall, and he was by the Chicago Blackhawks, other great prospects were picked and amongst them was Russian star forward Matvei Michkov who joined the Philadelphia Flyers on the podium. While he has since returned home to Russia and the KHL, he had time to meet with reporters and answered some questions about Bedard as all eyes will be on both forwards in coming years to see which will be the best in the NHL.
The rivalry does not however stop Michkov from having great things to say about Bedard and their relationship.
“He’s a great guy. We talked to him through an interpreter. We corresponded at first in general. When I had the tragic situation with my dad, he texted me ‘Hold on, I’m with you, everything will be fine. I see how you play and I think that you will succeed. If you have any questions, then write to me.’”
Michkov also had great things to say about Bedard’s parents and how involved and supportive they are of their son and young players.
“His family came up, his mom and dad come up too - I was already in the car - they asked about me. I went out to them, I also talked to his parents, also very nice, sociable, friendly people. They said ‘if you come to Vancouver some day, we are always glad to see you in our house”…I told him (Bedard) of course you aren’t likely to be in Russia but if you are, here you have my number l’m always happy to see you.”
It’s so nice to see how hockey creates bonds and feels like a huge family.
Michkov is currently having a good start to the KHL season and fans cannot wait to see what Bedard will go in his NHL debut.
