Matthew Tkachuk facing potential suspension from NHL Player Safety.
Tkachuk in hot water.
The newest member of the Florida Panthers has landed himself in hot water with the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety, and it sounds like a suspension may very well be forthcoming.
According to an official announcement from NHL Player Safety, Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk will have a hearing for what they described as "High-sticking" Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick. In reality the high-stick from Tkachuk more closely resembled an attempted eye poke, and no doubt this is also why it has drawn the attention of the league's disciplinary arm.
On Saturday night, Tkachuk and the Panthers faced off against the Los Angeles Kings, and it was in the closing moments of that game that Tkachuk appeared to deliberately slide the blade of his stick in between the openings in Quick's mask.
Here's a look at the incident itself, and the subsequent replays that followed and more clearly show the poke from the blade of Tkachuk's stick:
The poke would also lead to a melee between the Kings and the Panthers, which also no doubt helped draw attention to the incident itself:
I suspect there is a good chance we will see Tkachuk suspended for his actions, given the potential danger and harm this could bring to NHL goaltenders if it were allowed to become a trend.
