UPDATE 2: Matt Rempe has been suspended four games by NHL Player Safety.
UPDATE: Rempe has been called by NHL Player Safety for a supplemental discipline hearing.
Check it out:
And because the hearing is being conducted over the phone rather than in person, Rempe is looking at a 5 game suspension or less.
From TSN insider Pierre LeBrun:
In case you missed it last night, New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe was tossed from his team's 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
You can read the entire account of what happened further down, thanks to our earlier published report from yesterday evening. Post-game though, Devils head coach Travis Green made it clear that he expects supplemental discipline for Rempe from the NHL.
"I think there's some intent there to injure the player," Devils interim coach Travis Green said post-game about Rempe's flying elbow smash on Jonas Siegenthaler.
"Everyone who knows the game at all knows that [Siegenthaler] is in a vulnerable spot. Call it predatorial or whatever you want to call it. It's definitely not the first time that it's happened [for Rempe], and it's the second time against us," Green said.
Rempe was also called out by Devils tough guy Kurtis MacDermid, who twice tried to drop the gloves with Rempe but was rebuffed on both occasions. After the game MacDermid had some pointed words for Rempe.
"I asked him. There's a bit of a code. I thought he would've answered that. I don't know what he was told, but he said no," MacDermid said of Rempe. "And after a hit like that [on Bastian], it kind of goes without saying you should answer the bell in some way and be a man about it. Then he throws another hit that gets him kicked out and with a possible suspension. So, there's a right way to go about things and the wrong way."
"He's a young kid. He has a lot to learn still," MacDermid said of Rempe. "You don't do things like that when you're in your first year in the league. I lost quite a bit of respect for him tonight."

All Hell has broken loose at Madison Square Garden!
New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe has been tossed from the game and assessed a five minute Major penalty for elbowing New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler.
Rempe has seemingly had a target on his back all evening and twice declined to fight Devils winger Kurtis MacDermid. Here's the elbow on Siegenthaler and the ensuing mayhem:
MacDermid tried his best to get at Rempe for some retribution, but the officials managed to put the kibosh on that quickly.

And here's Rempe waving 'bye bye' to the Devils on his way to the showers:
It may be obvious, but I believe Rempe is looking at a suspension from NHL Player Safety for this clearly illegal elbow. Stay tuned.
