The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that they had placed goalie Matt Murray on long-term injured reserve prior to the start of the 2023-24 season, the final one on Murray’s contract with the club.
This came as a shock to many especially since Murray served as backup in the team’s second-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers. However, he is now reportedly out indefinitely, though the Maple Leafs did not provide details on the injury.
Back in May, Murray spoke to the media in the exit interviews and claimed he was healthy and ready to go in 2023-24.
But now he lands on Robidas Island…
This prompted former Sportsnet employee Howard Berger to make fun of the situation by writing a comedy bit depicting what took place when the Maple Leafs attempt to convince Murray to get injured.
I mean, you have to laugh about this…
Murray, who posted a 14-8-2 record with a .903 save percentage in his 26 appearances for the Maple Leafs, does have a history of concussions and so it may the reason for his absence and LTRI status.
Berger may joke about it, but the situation has created significant speculation about the abrupt change in Murray’s status as his LTRI status becomes the best-case scenario for Toronto to navigate the tight cap.
By operating as an LTIR team, Toronto avoids a $2 million salary cap charge for the 2024-25 season.
Better laugh than cry about it, I guess.
