Massive setback for Oilers' Evander Kane

This could throw a wrench in their plans.

Michael W.

Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane has found himself the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks, but this latest news update released this afternoon will likely force those plans to go on hold.

According to Bob Stauffer, there's a good chance that Kane will require surgery from an injury suffered during Edmonton's run to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final and be moved to Long Term Injured Reserve, meaning he wouldn't be ready for Oilers Training Camp next month.

This news directly conflicts with the report released yesterday by the "2 Mutts Hockey Podcast":

“Evander Kane will be ready for training camp, he will take part in the Captain Skates come early September. Going on LTIR isn’t the plan according to sources. Kane & his family have invested in staying in Edmonton over the next two years & beyond. The Ducks & Kings have interest in Kane but he’s not looking to waive his NMC at this time. He WANTS to be an Oiler!”

In fact, they've reacted to the recently released news by speculating that the Oilers could be forcing Kane to undergo surgery, writing the following:

"The Edmonton Oilers could be forcing Evander Kane’s hand here on going for surgery.

From all the information we got over the last week he was doing well in his recovery, he’s been able to train & do activities. Kane was planning on being ready for the start of the season. He would take part in the Captain Skates as well in early September. Going under the knife for surgery wasn’t in the cards.

As of a few days ago Bob’s information was not available to us as we were told what we reported.

We will take the blame for this one as Bob Stauffer says our information is much different than his on Evander Kane, that’s on @JMarshyBosco93 so come at him for this. Don’t be sending hate tweets to others. It’s under 30 minutes & the hate tweets are coming in fast, you have to love this platform for that."

Kane scored 24 goals with 20 assists in 77 regular season games during the 2023-24 campaign, and also added four goals and four assists in 20 playoff games as the Oilers came one victory away from their first Stanley Cup since 1990.
