A vicious elbow to the head or an oscar worthy performance?

The Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche clashed on Saturday night for Game 4 of their opening round series in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, and the game was not without its moments of controversy.

One of the most talked about moments will no doubt be one that took place during the game's very first period, a moment that involved Avalanche star defenseman Cale Makar and Stars forward Mason Marchment.

It occured with just a little over 2 minutes left to go in the opening frame and it would be Marchment who would act as the aggressor, appearing to deliver a devastating elbow to the head of Makar. Making matters worse, Makar was down on both knees at the time that Marchment delivered the blow, making it seem all that much more predatory in nature.

What made the elbow look so vicious however was Makar's body language after being hit, body language that did seem to appear to be a little dramatic with the benefit of instant replay. The officials on the ice however would still send Marchment to the box, awarding him a 2 minute minor for elbowing, and giving Makar and the Avalanche a power play.

You can see the replay of the moment in question in the short video below and judge for yourself:
