Mark Giordano linked to top Eastern Conference squad

One more year for the NHL's elder statesman?

Veteran defenseman Mark Giordano is the oldest player in the National Hockey League, and many assumed that the 2023-24 season was going to be his swan song. However, following the latest Stanley Cup Playoffs setback by the Toronto Maple Leafs, he indicated that he was interested in continuing his career.

“Mark has made the decision that he’s playing for a few more years,” Giordano's agent Rich Winter said. “He feels very confident. He’s been talking to a lot of people who tell him: Don’t quit until they make you."

He almost certainly won't be returning to the Maple Leafs despite the connection to general manager Brad Treliving dating back to their days with the Calgary Flames. But where could he potentially find employment? Don't be surprised to see the New York Rangers take a chance on him, according to Michael DeRosa of NHLTradeRumors.com:

“The New York Rangers could consider taking a shot on Giordano. When looking at their left side, it is clear that Giordano could compete for a spot on their bottom pairing if signed. In addition, he would give them another veteran with great leadership qualities, which would certainly be good for a contender like the Rangers,” DeRosa wrote.

Giordano was limited to 46 games last season, scoring three goals with six assists. He's coming off a two-year, $1.6 million deal he agreed to in the summer of 2022. In 1,146 games in the NHL spent with the Calgary Flames, Seattle Kraken and Maple Leafs, he's tallied 158 goals and 419 assists.

Will Giordano be able to secure a contract for what would be his 19th NHL season?
