Marc Staal officially retires and is immediately hired by NHL team
From the ice to the bench!
This just in, long-time NHL defenseman Marc Staal has announced his retirement and has joined the New York Rangers in a development coaching role.
From the Rangers:
The 37 year old Staal played just 35 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season, scoring one goal and five points. In total he managed 53 goals and 234 points over 1,136 career games spilt between the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Flyers.
Of course, he spent the majority of his career with the Rangers who selected him 12th overall back in 2005. He played with the team from 2007 until 2020. He was a stellar defenseman defenceman for the team for years but his cap hit hamstrung the team a bit in his least few seasons with the team and ultimately led fans to sour on him a bit.
Still, there's no denying the fact that Staal has a wealth of knowledge and experience. The Rangers have made a wise move by having Staal work closely with their young defensive prospects.
