What a night for Minnesota Wild veteran goalie Marc-Andre Fleury! Prior to puck drop in the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the veteran netminder is honored with a pregame ceremony for reaching 1,000 games, which he achieved on Dec. 31. He moved into sole possession of second place on the NHL’s all-time wins list in mid-January with his 552nd victory, only trailing Martin Brodeur (691) in that category.
A special tribute was put together was Fleury and he got to see a special video tribute and get a custom mask depicting all four NHL teams he has played for and a silver stick.
When the video was playing, it was easy to see how emotional and grateful Fleury was, and the camera even caught Penguins captain Sidney Crosby enjoying all the attention on his former teammate and close friend.
This is also the final game between Pittsburgh and Minnesota this season, and unfortunately it could be Fleury’s last chance to face the team that selected him fifth overall in 2003. He is currently in the final season of a twp-year deal he sign with the Wild.
Before the game, Fleury met up with Crosby and Kris Letang, who had a special gift from the Penguins.
For now, Fleury remains undecided about his future, but this was an incredible and emotional moment that he took in fully on Friday night.
Forever youthful, Fleury is one of the most beloved players and teammates across the NHL, and we are many that want him to sign another contract and return for another season. How about closing his career in Pittsburgh, where he played his first 13 seasons and won three Stanley Cup championships: 2009, 2016 and 2017? Wouldn't that be awesome?
