Maple Leafs prepare new offer as options are dwindling ahead of deadline!

Is this the right choice for a boost on the back end in Toronto?

So far, the Toronto Maple Leafs have lost out on trades for defensemen Chris Tanev and Sean Walker. On top of that, the Philadelphia Flyers just resigned possible trade target Nick Seeler, which leaves general manager Brad Treliving with very few options ahead of Friday’s deadline.

This prompted David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period to reveal how the Maple Leafs recently checked back on Joel Edmundson of the Washington Capitals as they continue to navigate the defensive market.

There is some logic to Edmundson become a Plan B, or C or D for Toronto seeing that he is considered a reliable defensive defenseman. He also has a Stanley Cup on his resume, which could help the Maple Leafs with their overall lack of playoff success…

In 44 games this season with Washington, Edmundson has one goal, five assists, 49 blocks, and 59 hits. He plays a shutdown game and could come at a low cost for Treliving, who’s been doing everything he can not to part with the team’s 2024 first-round pick in recent weeks. Walker was acquired by the Avalanche, along with a fifth-round draft pick in 2026 from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Ryan Johansen and a first-round selection in 2025.

Edmundson is also a pending unrestricted free agent who carries just a $1.75 million cap hit, and could be the ideal rental option in Toronto. The Maple Leafs were also linked to Edmundson's teammate Nick Jensen in the past as they keep exploring the market for right-handed defensemen.

“They were looking at a lot of right-shot D… I heard Nick Jensen was kind of name that they were looking at,” insider Elliotte Friedman said last month.

The clock is ticking, and the options are dwindling for the Maple Leafs and GM Treliving.

Edmundson could be the answer for this season.
