Maple Leafs lose Aube-Kubel on waivers.

Rival takes advantage of the Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs took a gamble and it has not paid off.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, Leafs forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel has been claimed off waivers by the Washington Capitals. Aube-Kubel is now officially a member of the Capitals roster, and the Leafs lose a veteran forward in Aube-Kubel for absolutely nothing in return.

The Aube-Kubel experiment in Toronto is certain to go down as a failure with the whole affair lasting just a total of 6 games. Over that stretch of play, Aube-Kubel failed to register even a single point, but did pick up 4 penalty minutes and finished his tenure as a Maple Leaf with a plus minus rating of -1.

It seems unlikely that this is what Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas had envisioned when he signed Aube-Kubel to a 1 year deal at an average annual value and cap hit of $1 million when free agency opened in the summer.

That being said he is one season removed from capturing a Stanley Cup championship as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, a season in which he had 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in 67 games with the Avalanche.

The Capitals are no doubt hoping they get that version of Aube-Kubel with this waiver pickup.
