Despite the fact that he missed the entire 2023-24 NHL season after having undergone bilateral hip surgery, the Toronto Maple Leafs saw fit to retain goaltender Matt Murray with a one-year contract worth just under $1 million; Murray will begin the season behind Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz on Toronto's goaltending depth chart.

While speaking on the Slangin' the Bizkit Podcast, Murray explained that the surgery gave him a "nice reset" and that he's looking forward to proving that he can stay healthy in the upcoming year.

“This year is just about proving that I can stay healthy and that I got a nice little reset with the surgery. So proving that I stay healthy and still get the job done, that’s why I took a one-year deal. It’s kind of like a prove it deal to see what I can do, said Murray.

“And if I can do both of those things, stay healthy and prove that I can still get the job done, I would imagine maybe a couple opportunities pop up next year. I’m taking things one year at a time.”

Murray also explained that re-signing with the Leafs was his top priority, expressing love for the city of Toronto as well as his Leafs teammates along with the coaching and training staff.

“I love everything about the city, other than the traffic. It’s a great city, I think it’s a top city in the world," he said.

“The group of guys in the room is unbelievable," he continued. "The staff is unbelievable, the training staff, I know there’s a lot of turnover at times but, the training staff and that group of people tend to stay the same and they nailed it with the group that they have here."

In 272 career NHL games, Murray has amassed a record of 146-86-24 with a 2.79 goals against average, .910 save percentage and 15 shutouts.
