Chara isn’t asking out of New York, but…

Last week, Zdeno Chara set the NHL record for most games played by a defenseman. However, fans were warned that after that record-breaking night, the veteran blue liner could be on the move.
On Friday, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan offered the latest update on the trade chatter about Chara as last week, Pierre LeBrun mentioned that the veteran was getting a lot of interest on the trade market with rival teams calling in to inquire about the veteran defenseman.
“New York is likely missing the postseason, but I’m told Chara isn’t asking out. He views it as having signed a one-year commitment to the organization, and he plans to see it through. If a team goes to GM Lou Lamoriello with a trade proposal, Lamoriello has enough respect for Chara that he will bring it to the player and his representatives and they’ll talk it out. Chara will have some family considerations — his wife and kids are still in Boston.”
While Chara is not a hot commodity due to his his age and declining play, it is fun to see that the 44-year-old is getting interest on the market. A playoff contender could look to acquire Chara for his leadership and playoff experience rather than production.
He could be sought after by a contender looking for a major leader and a very physical presence on a third pairing for sure.
There is excitement for some Boston Bruins fans, thinking that Chara could return. However, while the Bruins need another defenseman, it should preferably a top-four player on the left side. Sure Chara plays on the left side, but he cannot be a first- or second-pairing defenseman at this stage of his career anymore…
If he moves, Chara would be more useful as third-pairing defenseman for a few playoff-caliber teams. Let’s see if he moves as the deadline grows nearer…
