Fans desperately want to know when they will see Barry Trotz again behind the bench of an NHL team.
Earlier this season, Trotz hinted at the possibility of returning to coach in the league, but would prefer behind the bench of an original six team.
On Wednesday, we got the latest update on where Trotz stands in his coaching future, as he stated on the latest episode of “The Chirp with Daren Millard” podcast that it is unlikely he returns to coaching this season while he continuing to take care of family matters, despite getting contacted by some teams across the NHL.
“I don’t know yet,” said Trotz. “I’m deciding. There’s a couple teams that reached out and I said I’m not there yet. I’m probably going to take the rest of the year off and see where I am. It’s still a part of me but I’m going to continue to stay true to myself and my family right now.”
If ever a team needs replacement beyond 2023, you better believe Trotz will be on top of the list of candidates. He has a career record of 914-670-168 with 60 ties in 1,812 regular-season games (.567 points percentage) with the Nashville Predators, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders since 1998-99. His 914 regular-season wins rank third among coaches in NHL history. Trotz won the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018.
He was fired as coach of the Islanders on May 9.
When chatter was loud that Trotz could take a coaching job early in 2022-23 as the Winnipeg Jets had attempted to hire him, the experienced bench boss had said that he was most interested in a position with a team that would enable him to not only take on head coaching duties, but to move into a management position as well.
It remains to be seen which team could make him the best offer - maybe as soon as the summer of 2023…
