This just in, the Los Angeles Kings have signed captain Anze Kopitar to a two year contract extension worth $7 million per season. The contract kicks in starting in 2024-25, as Kopitar is still signed at a whopping $10 million for 2023-24.

"We're pleased to have reached an agreement that will keep Anze in Los Angeles as our group takes the next step in competing for a Stanley Cup," said Rob Blake, vice president and general manager of the LA Kings in a prepared statement. "He is the heart and soul of this team as our captain and he will continue to play a major role on our club."

"Los Angeles has become home for me and my family, and I'm excited to extend my career here," said Kopitar in the same statement. "I've been with this organization through it all and I know our group is close to achieving something special. I look forward to helping us reach that next level and achieving the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup again."

The 35 year old ageless wonder put up 28 goals and 74 points for the Kings this past season, his best offensive totals in five years.

To me, this contract signing is a sign that maybe GM Rob Blake is trying to do some damage control in the Kings' locker room. It's not exactly a secret that the Kings' veteran players were not happy in the way that Jonathan Quick was disposed of in the final year of his contract. With Kopitar entering this upcoming season with no contractual obligation for 2024 and beyond, this to me signals a commitment from Blake that should resonate with the rest of the team. There's no doubt that Blake and the Kings dropped the ball in handling Quick, but that's not going to happen with Kopitar. Kudos to Blake and the Kings' brass for recognizing the error of their ways and in doing things right by Kopitar.

All that aside though, Kopitar is still an excellent player and deserves every penny he'll be paid on this new deal.
